Evelyn studied in Germany under Herr Hertzfeld for 2.5 years. Herr Hertfeld's art is descended from that of Max Doerner. The focus being the look of realism of the object - whether it is a real life object or fantasy of the artist. Herr Hertfeld instructed Evelyn in many mediums and she received his certificate of completion and in a very short time.
Joining Evelyn I started the rigorous task of drawing perspective lessons. A very important foundation for an artist, but not at all exciting and very tedious. Having finally achieved the right to put brush to paper - i began learning watercolor. I learned techniques for gaining the different textures encountered in life - fur, rocks, skin and fluffy clouds to name a few.
After watercolor came oils. An amazing change from watercolors, oils are a very forgiving medium, but a totally different technique from watercolor. Once again I went through the process of learning how to paint fur, rocks, skin, fluffy clouds and many others. Don't get me wrong though, I am far from knowing a tiny fraction of how to do things, but I have enough knowledge I can figure it out. Every painting has a challenge to it that has to be overcome - if it didn't painting wouldn't be any fun.
So intermixed with oils I did colored pencils, pastels, scratchboard and pen and ink. Until reaching the point I could do the Old Master Technique. A technique that combines the egg tempera with oils. The egg tempera is done using only white and black and then glazes of oil are applied over top - giving the painting a glowing effect. This is used primarily for portraits but works for any subject. My subject matter now is primarily portraits, figure drawings, and animal portraits in any of the mediums I am familiar with.
