5.18.02 ~ The garden now is filling out and plants in bloom are more common now. Alas, so are the weeds. Fortunately over the years i have composted and mulched continually so the weeds pull out quite easily - even the pesky ones with neverending roots it seems (grrrr - wire grass!!). But a quick going through for removal of weeds then i can look at the beauties that have emerged.

The irises have been in bloom and are now in there fading stages. One observation - i am going to need to do some major thinning this year - they are overgrown and crowded. I have this wonderful purple flower blooming now that i got some years ago and unfortunately i don't know what it is called. It has an absolutely wonderful fragrance and in the evenings it just wafts about the yard. As does my David Austin's 'Sharifa Asma' rose - that is a varying pink and has a wonderful perfume to it (photo right). And it was given to me by a dear friend so it is an especially special rose to me.

Currently my clematis is blooming - there is a problem with it though. It is a gorgeous dark purple, but unfortunately with where i have it placed it is surrounded by dark foliage and the flowers are totally lost except upon close examination.

I lost my favorite chrysanthemum over the winter - 'Cloud 9'. It was beautiful last year (photo on left) and i don't quite understand what happened that it didn't come back this year. But i will definitely be on the look out for a replacement - it has a huge loose white bloom with a yellow center. I am glad to say though that both of my containers of lotuses made it over the winter and are emerging wonderfully. Last year they were gorgeous (photo on right) and each year gets better.

The vegetable garden is looking good. The 'Knight' peas have pods, the 'Roma 2' beans are getting ready to bloom, the potatoes are bushy and the tomatoes were put in last weekend. Besides constantly picking rocks out of it - so far it is doing great for its first year.

Enjoy and check back often for updates!! Don't forget to check on the progress of The Spring!!!
